Our Mission Statement

The mission of Saint John the Baptist Catholic School is to participate in the teaching ministry of the Catholic Church, by proclaiming the Gospel message of God's universal love for each person created in His image and likeness. We are called to form a true community of faith in which God's deep love is nurtured, experienced, and shared among all members. We strive to be a clear and understandable witness of God's love by our loving service to all who are entrusted to our care.

Our History

St. John the Baptist School has a long and rich history in Plum Borough. Our school was dedicated on September 2, 1959 to St. John the Baptist who prepared the world for the coming of Christ. When our school first opened its doors, there were eleven large classrooms and a large multi-purpose room; a school addition was completed in 1963 and dedicated in January of 1964. We opened our doors with an enrollment of 288 students. Morning and afternoon Kindergarten Programs were added during the 1984-1985 school years and our Parish preschool was incorporated during the 2012-2013 school year. The majority of the students who attend our school are from Plum Borough and Penn Hills. Because of continued growth in the area, the prospects for the continuation of our school’s growth are positive.
Since opening our doors we have also maintained a strong tradition of academic excellence. Our students consistently score two to three grade levels above their current grade on standardized tests every year. Many area valedictorian and salutatorians are counted among our alumni with the local high school graduating classes of 2010 boasting three valedictorians who graduated from St. John the Baptist School. After graduating high school, we also have alumni graduates from such prestigious universities as Yale, Carnegie Mellon University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, our current students routinely earn many top place finishes in area science and history competitions.
